FREE Interactive drama workshops for Years 8 and 9 in Havering secondary schools
According to Police statistics, those aged between 15 and 24 are more subject to ‘Stop and Search’ or ‘Stop and Account’ than any others. 34% of this age group will be stopped in the course of a year, compared with 1.4% from outside this age group.
It could be that those aged between 15 and 24 are just more likely to be on the street, in the park, or in other public areas… but arrest figures would suggest that they are also more likely to be in possession of drugs or offensive weapons. However, many young people feel that they are unfairly singled out for Police attention. Many say that they find the experience humiliating and annoying.
In reality, the figures may point to a smaller number of young people being stopped with greater regularity, but if you ask a group of 15 or 16-year-olds if they have been stopped, a majority will say that they have been, and many will express a negative attitude whether they have actually been stopped or not.
Arc’s Stop and Think is a highly-engaging intervention programme, which aims to improve Police and community relations and bust the myths surrounding Stop and Search, including:
• Why the Police use Stop and Search or Stop and Account and the difference between them;
• Young people’s legal rights and responsibilities;
• What behaviours might cause young people to be stopped;
• How to behave during a stop in order that no offences are committed as a result of the procedure itself.
Our interactive Stop and Think programme for Years 8 and 9 uses live theatre to tackle the issues in a safe and inclusive environment. To book a day of up to three 50-minute performances for up to 90 students each session, please email Theresa Snooks or call Arc on 020 8595 8509.
Broadcast and Broadcast Junior
funded by Havering Community Safety
FREE Interactive Forum Theatre workshops for Havering secondary and primary schools
Arc's Broadcast performance programme is available to Primary Years 5 and 6 and Secondary Years 7 to 9, using Forum Theatre to explore online safety. Under our Child Sexual Exploitation umbrella of work, Broadcast follows the story of a young girl who is being ‘groomed’ by someone she has met online, and her cousin is trying to stop her meeting up with him. It looks at predators who use modern technology to befriend young people, who can then be manipulated into harmful relationships.
“The impact that this has made on the young people that [Arc Theatre has] presented to is immense. They have been educated about a topic in a fun way, which encourages them to learn and remember, particularly the consequences.” PC Melissa Gilmour - Dedicated Schools Officer, Havering
“I thought it was really well pitched in terms of age group. Good mix of giving them the relevant facts and allowing them to have a part in the decision making and think through real life issues.” Havering Secondary School Teacher
Arc’s interactive Forum Theatre programme for young people raises awareness of technology safety and age-appropriate online behaviour. It tackles issues such as ‘sexting’, grooming, internet predators, cyberbullying, sexual behaviour and how to keep safe. The programme has been specially created to:
- encourage respect, healthy relationships and personal responsibility;
- highlight the differences between porn and real-life sexual relationships;
- inform young audiences of the facts, figures and dangers surrounding sexting;
- explore the very real and damaging consequences of cyberbullying;
- raise awareness about the law and legal implications of sexting, cyberbullying and internet misuse;
- equip young people with basic communication tools and reasoned arguments to
- enable them to make real change in their own choices and behaviours;
- signpost who and where to turn to for help;
- explore difficult and sensitive issues in a safe and inclusive environment.
Our interactive Broadcast programme for Years 5 to 6 and 7 to 9 uses live theatre to tackle the issues in a safe and inclusive environment. To book a day of up to three 60-minute performances for up to 60 students each session, please email Theresa Snooks or call Arc on 020 8595 8509.
