Finding the Words

Finding the Words

Funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Finding the Words is Arc’s latest public-speaking, performance and media project for young women aged 13 to 19, giving a stronger voice in the debate surrounding female exploitation.

Working with Arc's professional team, Phase 1 of the project gave our twenty participants from Barking & Dagenham schools the opportunity to learn new drama techniques, research, script-writing and film and video skills. Led by Arc's Natalie Smith with Neelofer Ajazmir, together the group were able to create a powerful film with film-maker Grace Pluckrose-Oliver, which explores issues ranging from language, relationships and the law, through to abuse and rape.

The first phase of the project ended with a special launch of the film and celebration event - to see images, visit our Finding the Words Facebook album

Phase 2 - the tour!

This month, Finding the Words starts its second exciting phase as it begins a three-week tour of Barking & Dagenham schools and youth centres! Encouraging female solidarity, empowerment and healthy life choices, the tour includes a participative Forum Theatre workshop and a special screening of the film, proudly presented by the young female participants.

"... a very well done to your team - the production is of very high quality and a very seasoned message to our young girls. I believe the message is clear and won't be detrimental to any young person below the age of 14 - if anything it will better equip them with knowledge and help them know what to avoid to make themselves safer even amongst those they consider to be ‘friends'." Mary Mensah-Shofolahan, Senior Youth Worker at The Vibe
