Female Genital Mutilation is the partial or total removal of female external genitalia for non-medical reasons. It’s also known as female circumcision, cutting or sunna. Religious, social or cultural reasons are sometimes given for FGM. However, FGM is child abuse. It’s a violation of human rights. It’s dangerous, and it’s ILLEGAL.
With funding from Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC) Small Grants Programme, we are pleased to be touring the northwest-London Boroughs of Brent, Ealing and Hammersmith & Fulham with our No More Whispers secondary school performance workshops for a third year in 2024-25. However, this year, we are delighted to also offer our FREE INSET* training session for teachers and professionals in the area!
No More Whispers is Arc’s initiative designed to support the movement to end FGM within a generation. The programme uses participative, live performance plus multi-media film, PowerPoint presentation and sensitive discussion to raise awareness of the issues surrounding FGM, helping both students and adults explore the practice and its consequences within the context of human rights and Violence Against Women and Girls.
Arc’s No More Whispers interactive Forum Theatre workshops are a compelling engagement tool, delivered by our highly-skilled facilitator and trained, professional actors who tell the story of three students exploring which Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education issue to use as the focus of their social media campaign. The audience must interact with the characters so that they can investigate FGM, learn about the subject, why it happens, how it affects women, and help them reach a positive conclusion. The programme also highlights local and national support services and organisations and how to support victims, survivors and those at risk.
*Arc’s FREE 60-minute INSET session, which complements safeguarding, welfare and CPD training, is available for teams of school staff (both teaching and non-teaching, Parent-Governors and PTA representatives), carers, educationalists, support workers and health services, and will be delivered online on Zoom on Monday 14 October 2024.
